I was on travel for business earlier this week and I got caught in the great white East. At one point I had to drive 75 miles of Appalachian roads that had received 1-3 inches of snow overnight, and through ongoing snowfall.

I was realizing as I was driving that I had never actually driven in snow before in my whole life. I have seen a decent amount of snow, and even lived in central Illinois for a few years for school, but I never had a car during that time. I’ve been on many business-related trips to snowy areas in the last couple decades, but I either took taxis or traveled with a coworker who did the driving.

Needless to say, I survived. Not even a smidgen of a slide, but I had to learn about managing the buildup on the windshield. One trick I picked up, and I honestly don’t know how wise this is, is to follow the car in front of me close enough that the wet spray from them hits my windshield to help break up the otherwise dry frozen layer of crust that the windshield wipers could not penetrate.

A vital move is to grab a wiper that is build up with ice and slap it against the windshield to knock the ice off.

Not wise. Clean it off yourself before you set off.

Bonus points if the vehicle is in motion, and you grab the blade on the up-swing by sticking your arm out the window.

No, I cleaned it all off before. I mean the stuff that builds up while driving.

Ah... didn’t sound like something an oppo would do.

Still not wise though, though I’ve been with people who have had no choice (low washer fliud). You need a de-icer washer fluid.

Yeah, that’s what I meant the car and wiper should be in motion before attempting this move.

Defrost, it’s all about blasting the defrost. Once you get going and have passed initial defrosting just keep it going. Even if it is still snowing the windshield starts to act like it has forward deflectors up and the snow just bounces off.

Yeah, that’s not a good move in the snow. If you’re that close and that car stops suddenly, you ain’t gonna stop in time.
